Alaska {Final Thoughts}

I am a little sad that this is my final post on Alaska because it's been so fun blogging about the trip. I thought I needed one more post though to wrap everything up!

If you missed any of my Alaska posts, here they all are:

Some other things about Alaska:

Weather?
A lot of people have been asking me what the weather was like in Alaska. It was cool, but I never thought it was overly cold. The temperature typically got into the 50s or 60s most days. I pretty much wore jeans, a sweatshirt, and a jacket every day and would be comfortable. When you were by the glaciers, it did get a little colder (around the 30s or 40s), but I just piled on a few extra layers and was fine.

Favorite Part?
Every time someone asks me what my favorite part of the entire trip was, I always say the Hubbard Glacier. I have simply never seen anything so beautiful in my entire life.

My favorite excursion that we took though was definitely the float plane!

This would be my advice if you were planning a trip to Alaska.....

Do both a land and sea portion.
I loved that we stayed a few nights on land and then did the cruise because I felt like I got to see so much of Alaska. You would miss a lot if you just did one or the other.

Do the land portion before the cruise.
The land is a lot of late nights and early mornings, and it can get pretty tiring. I enjoyed having some relaxing days on the cruise after being so busy traveling on land.

Book a shore excursion in every port!
All of the towns in Alaska are pretty small and it doesn't take that much time to walk around them. When you have a whole day in port, you might as well see as much as you can by doing excursions (plus, who knows if you'll ever get back to Alaska again?!). The float plane is an absolute must in Alaska. We also did a glacier tour, whale watching cruise, and jeep adventure. I really enjoyed all of them. If we would have had more time, I would have liked to visit a dog sled camp (apparently they let you hold baby Huskies) or a helicopter tour. We would schedule our excursion in the morning and then still had all afternoon to explore the town.

Bring a good rain jacket.
It rained more than not in Alaska. You have to be prepared because you don't want a little rain getting in the way of your tour. For the most part, the rain was tolerable. The only place it really bothered me was in Denali and the fact that we couldn't see Mount McKinley. But a waterproof jacket is a must if you want to stay dry and warm! I got a North Face one for Christmas, and it was well worth the money!

And a pair of rain boots.
I've had my rain boots for a little less than a year now, and I absolutely love them. I kept going back in forth as to whether I should bring them with me though. They're big, so I couldn't just pack them in my suitcase. I ended up bringing them, and I am SO glad I did. I wore them on the plane (and they were actually really easy to slide on and off going through TSA), and then I wore them probably about 80% of the trip. Even if it wasn't raining right when we left in the morning, there was almost always a chance of some rain, so I would wear my boots. They kept my feet dry and warm the entire time. Hunter boots are expensive (it took me a while to actually decide to spend the money on them), but honestly, it would have been worth the money to just wear these boots on this trip alone. Hunter boots are money well spent!

Alaska was the prettiest place I have traveled to so far in my life. I love the beach, and I've been swimming with dolphins in the Cayman Islands, but there is just nothing like Alaska. It's so different from anything I had ever seen before. We kept saying that it was a once-in-a-lifetime vacation, but I would go back in a heartbeat. Plus I need to go back because I really want to hold one of those Husky puppies..... :)

If Alaska isn't on your bucket list, it should be. It was probably the best trip I've ever taken, and I am SO blessed that I was able to travel to Alaska!

Alaska {Part 10}

Today I'm finishing up my Alaska posts with the last two days of my vacation. I am going to do one more post in the next couple of days to wrap it all up and share some of my final thoughts/tips on Alaska. I hope you enjoy reading about the end of my trip!

Day 11 - Friday, June 27 - Vancouver, Canada
This was our last full day of vacation. We woke up on the ship and ate our final breakfast in the Windjammer while overlooking the Vancouver skyline.

We decided to stay an extra night in Vancouver instead of just heading straight home. I am so glad that we did because I really loved Vancouver. We got off the ship really early too, so we had an entire day to explore the city. We stopped by our hotel to drop off our luggage, and then headed over to Stanley Park, which is a huge park where you can see the city and the harbor.

While we were walking through the park, we stumbled across the Vancouver Aquarium (which is in the middle of the park) and decided to go through it. I ended up really enjoying it - I thought it was a pretty good aquarium!

These little jelly fish were my favorite. One minute, they were all laying a heap together.....

....and the next, they were floating all around!

On the way out, we were starving and picked up some of these gourmet candy bars from the gift shop. Yummy!

We walked back into the downtown area and ate lunch at this cute little bistro called Cinch.

I also had to check out a chocolate shop I found online called Thierry. I pretty much fell in love with it. They had tons of pastries, desserts, chocolates, and drinks. And they had a nice patio out front that you could relax and eat at. If I lived in Vancouver, Thierry would be a place I would go a lot. Just look at all of these different chocolates!

These were the two chocolates I ended up getting. They all looked so good that I couldn't just settle on one! I can't even tell you what flavors they were because the labels in the store were printed in French, but they were very delicious.

We could finally check into our hotel, so we did that next. We stayed at the Hyatt Regency, and when we checked in, they told us that we were getting a corner room and that it would be a little bit bigger. I was so shocked when we walked in because it was huge, especially in comparison to the tiny stateroom on the cruise ship. I kept saying that I wish we were staying longer in Vancouver just to enjoy the room some more :)

My dad decided to stay and take a nap in the hotel room, so my mom and I grabbed a Starbucks in the lobby and set out to explore. (And it rained of course, but by that point, I was used to the rain!)

I had to stop at another bakery called Soirette as well. They were a tea and macaron shop, and I was obsessed with how cute it was.

I love macarons, and I always try to get some on vacation if I can find them because they're so difficult to find at home.

These are the ones we ended up getting. We tried the chocolate, caramel, blueberry, cappuccino, rose, and creme brulee macarons. I liked them all!

Even their packaging was adorable. I know, I have a bakery obsession problem....

This was the rose flavored macaron - definitely a unique flavor!

We swung by the hotel, met up with my dad, and went to Second Cup, which is a Canadian coffee chain. I had gone there when I went to Montreal back in April, so I thought it would be fun to go again. I'm a creature of habit and ordered the frozen hot chocolate. It made me a little sad to be drinking it without my KBS friends this time!

We walked down by the water and saw our boat again. It's crazy how fast the week on the cruise went.

Gastown was next on our list of things to see. It's a cute little area of town with shops and restaurants, and I really enjoyed walking around there. It felt very European to me!

We ate dinner at the Black Frog where we watched the Radiance of the Seas sail away from the dock. It made us a little sad to see it leave us behind. Ha!

I made my parents go back to Thierry so I could pick up a little bag of chocolate madeleines simply because I've heard of them before, they're French (and I'm obsessed with all things French), and I'd never tried one before. I took them back home with me, and they were good!

Day 12 - Saturday, June 28 - Vancouver, Canada/Cincinnati, OH
This was our last day of vacation. After being gone for almost two weeks, it felt weird to actually be going home. We ate Starbucks in our hotel before leaving for the airport. I was blown away by the views from the airplane. You could see snow covered mountain peaks beneath the clouds!

We had another layover in Minneapolis, and I snapped this picture while we waiting for our flight to actually take off (it kept getting delayed). Armed with my boarding pass and favorite candy bar......what more do you need?

It always kind of sad to go back home after an absolutely amazing vacation. Although I do love seeing Coco again! We bought her this bandanna in Alaska, and I think it's just so cute.

And that was the end of a once-in-a-lifetime vacation. Like I mentioned earlier, I am going to do one more post to wrap up my Alaska trip soon!

Alaska {Part 9}

Day 10 - Thursday, June 26 - Day at Sea
Our last day on the cruise ship was another day at sea. I loved the fact that our two days at sea were the first and last days. The days at sea are always pretty relaxing, so it was nice to have a relaxing day coming off of the land portion and another one at the end of the trip.

My mom and I started the day off at Zumba. I love Zumba, but I don't usually do it that often, so I was happy to see that they had a free class on board! We then ate breakfast in the Windjammer and stopped by the coffee shop for an espresso brownie. The coffee shop sold specialty coffee for an additional charge, so we just assumed that everything there must cost extra. But our cruise director, who had led Zumba, told us that morning that the espresso brownies were free and that we had to try them. They were SO good, and I just wish I had known about them sooner. Ha!

We met up with my dad in the Centrum because our cruise director was challenging the captain to a cake decorating challenge. You know I had to see that!

One of the pastry chefs walked them through assembling and decorating a black forest cake. It was actually really fun to watch!

Next we headed up on deck to watch the polar bear plunge. One of the things that I love about days at sea are all the fun things to do around the ship! For this activity, they were asking people to donate money to the Make-a-Wish foundation, and if they reached a certain amount of money, some of the crew would jump into the pool. And considering we were in Alaska at the outdoor pool, the water was pretty cold. They ended up reaching their quota though, so we got to see them jump in! Here's the captain doing a belly flop....

....and our cruise director.

We also watched an ice carving demonstration (although I didn't get a good picture of it!). When we were at the Hubbard Glacier earlier in the week, some of the crew had gone out and grabbed a large chunk of floating ice that had fallen off the glacier, and that's what they used for the carving.

We grabbed lunch at the Park Cafe (which was probably my favorite place on ship even though it was small), and we went back to our room and ate on the balcony.

We did some packing and then sat out on the balcony again with some drinks. Pure bliss!

There were still a few places on the ship that I had not been to yet, so later in the afternoon, we walked around and saw some more of the ship. You know you're on a pretty big ship when you've been staying on it for a week and still haven't seen everything!

Our first stop was this cute little Starquest bar on the very top of the ship.

We went to the helipad too. Since that was at the front of the ship, it was extremely windy!

I really miss being on this cruise ship!

I did some more relaxing on our balcony with my book as well. I had a pretty nice view too.....

Pre-dinner selfie. Ha!

For dinner that night I ordered the Spanish tapas plate (which I did NOT like, but at least I decided to try something new, right?), the seafood & mash (which was great - a variety of fried seafood and mashed potatoes), and key lime pie for dessert.

As we were leaving dinner, I realized that we hadn't taken any pictures in the dining room, so I snapped these on the way out.

The views from the ship were so pretty for our last night.

The final show was a comedian with a little farewell show at the end. They brought up a bunch of the crew to say goodbye to us.

And we (of course!) had to spend our last evening in the Quill & Compass. We did music trivia movie tunes and then just hung out. One of the waitresses there recognized us and knew our order by the end of the week since we went there every night. I wish I could go back there tonight!

That was all the fun of our last day on the cruise ship. Next I'll be blogging about our day in Vancouver since we chose to stay an extra night there!
